The problem

Social apps today are built around profiles and swiping — not doing things together.

  • Dating apps are high-pressure and one-on-one; many people want low-stakes, activity-based connection.
  • Event apps show what’s happening but not who’s going or who’s down to join.
  • Making plans with friends is fragmented across group chats, and discovering new people with similar interests nearby is hard.

Result: loneliness, missed local experiences, and no single place to say “I’m doing X — who’s in?”

Activity-first social discovery. Users pick what they want to do (coffee, hiking, concerts, brunch, etc.), see who’s interested nearby, discover places and events, and connect through real plans — not just likes.

  • Discover — Activities, places, and live events (Ticketmaster) in one feed.
  • Connect — See who’s down for the same activity; send connection requests and chat.
  • Do — Create or join events, broadcast plans to connections, and show up.

We’re building the default layer for “who’s doing what, near me, right now.”

🎯 Activity-first discovery

Choose from 15+ activities (Coffee & Social, Pickleball, Hiking, Concerts, Yoga, Brunch, etc.). See who’s interested nearby and explore places + events filtered by activity.

📍 Map & places

Interactive map of events and Google Places (cafes, courts, trails). Distance filter, search, and “Playa Pick” — a curated, high-rated spot recommendation per activity per area.

📅 Events

Create events with visibility: public, approval-required, private, or QR check-in. Recurring events, cohosts, themes. Integrations with Ticketmaster for live events and ticketing.

📢 Broadcasts

“Who’s down for coffee tomorrow?” Send a broadcast to connections or post publicly. Recipients can accept and open a chat. One active broadcast per user to keep intent clear.

👥 Connections & chat

Request connections from activity interest or event attendees. Accept/decline, then chat 1:1 or in event/group threads. Notifications and message history.

🎲 Raffle & roulette

Host-run raffle at events: countdown, roulette-style winner reveal, confetti. Scheduled raffle time and “show to attendees” toggle. Drives engagement and memorability at gatherings.

Safety & trust

Designed for comfort and control.

  • Public place suggestions — Encourage meetups at cafes, parks, venues.
  • Privacy controls — Users choose when and how they show up (activity, distance, visibility).
  • Report & block — In-app reporting and blocking; blocked users are removed from connections and hidden.
  • Admin dashboard — Web-based moderation (roles, reports, event/user oversight) for scale.

Our initial focus is US metro areas: adults 18–45 who want to do more in real life with both friends and new people. That’s a SAM of tens of millions in Tier 1 cities alone. We capture value through engagement (time on app, connections, events created/joined) with a path to premium features, promotions, and event/venue partnerships.

TAM/SAM support a multi-billion-dollar outcome if we become the default for “what’s happening and who’s in” in key cities.

Premium plans

Playa Plus & Playa Lux
Upsell paid features in premium tiers: enhanced discovery, more connections, priority in feeds, exclusive events, and other premium-only perks. Free tier drives adoption; Plus and Lux capture willing-to-pay users.

Local business partnerships

Collab with local businesses
Partner with cafes, venues, gyms, and activity spots to promote their businesses to Playa users — sponsored Playa Picks, promoted events, and in-app placements. Revenue share or fixed fees per city and vertical.

Premium subscriptions plus local merchant spend create a diversified, scalable business model as we expand city by city.

Rollout strategy

City-by-city density wins. We launch where we can achieve critical mass quickly and prove repeat usage before expanding.

Phase 1 — Beachhead

San Diego
First market: strong activity culture (beach, pickleball, coffee, events). Validate core loops, retention, and event creation. Default location and Playa Pick tuned for San Diego.

Phase 2 — Tier 1 expansion

Los Angeles, New York City
Scale the playbook: local places, events, and broadcasts. Density in neighborhoods and activity verticals. Partnerships with venues and event creators.

Phase 3 — Broader Tier 1

SF Bay Area, Chicago, Austin, Miami, Boston, etc.
Expand by demand and data. Reuse onboarding, moderation, and growth playbooks. National brand and network effects.

Each city gets dedicated onboarding, local Playa Picks, and event/place relevance. Success metric: weekly active users and events per city.

Why now

  • Post-pandemic demand — People want in-person connection and experiences; habits have shifted toward “doing things” again.
  • Activity culture — Pickleball, running clubs, coffee culture, and local events are mainstream; no app owns “who’s doing this near me.”
  • APIs and infra — Google Places, Ticketmaster, and push/maps make it feasible to build a rich, local, activity-first product without building everything in-house.
  • Differentiation — We’re not another swipe app; we’re the layer that turns “I want to do X” into “here’s who and where.”
